Musical Notes and Clef Afghan with Variations Chart

For all the musicians in your life, why not crochet a beautiful musical notes with clef afghan? The chart is 90 squares across by 110 squares high, so it's quite manageable. Make fist sized balls of yarn and place in zip-lock bags. Use separate balls of yarn for each color change section in order to avoid carrying long lengths of yarn across pattern. Keep all balls of yarn on wrong side of work. Use an I/5.5mm hook to start the chain and an H/5.0mm to complete the afghan.

Notes: For color change, drop first color to wrong side of work; pick up next color. Always change colors in last stitch made by working last yarn over with new color. Carry unused yarn across row, tugging gently to conceal. Keep unused yarn to back of work.

Row 1:With I/5.5 mm hook, ch 91, switch to an H/5.0mm hook. In 2nd ch from the hook, sc in each ch. Ch 1 and turn.
Row 2-6: Sc in each sc. Ch 1 and turn.
7-101: Follow desired chart.

  1. I usually use a double crochet and a 3-stitches-per-square for these types of afghans. With using a single crochet, its obviously going to be much smaller than my usual ones. Can you tell me the approx dimensions of the finished afghan?

  2. If you are using worsted weight yarn, in the 3 dc stitch and an I hook,, the afghan will be approx 81 inches x 110 inches.

  3. how many skeins of worsted weight yarn will the afghan take?

  4. I would get 6 skeins each of Super Saver. You are going to be making bobbins so there will be waste yarn.
